A frame is always a little wider and longer than the mattress it holds, so measure your room against the frame's outside dimensions, shown on each product page.

Which size for which room

As a rough guide, a Queen bed frame suits most couples and fits most HDB master bedrooms with space left for bedside tables. A Super Single bed frame suits a teenager or single adult in a common bedroom, and a Single bed frame works well in a kids' room or study. A King size bed frame needs a larger master bedroom, so check its outside size against your floor plan first.

Why solid teak for a bed frame in Singapore's humidity

Almost every bed frame we sell is made of solid teak. Teak has a naturally high oil content, which helps it resist moisture, rot and insects. It isn't termite-proof, and no wood is, but it is a dense, durable timber that suits a humid climate.

That matters for a bed, which carries weight every night: MDF and particleboard can swell at the joints when they take in moisture. Small surface cracks that can appear as teak adjusts to the weather don't affect its strength.

Teak ranges from light to dark brown, so no two frames look exactly alike. To keep the colour, our wood care guide suggests teak oil about once every three months.

Teak or suar?

Alongside teak, we make one suar wood design, the Nicolina Suar Wood Platform Bed Frame, in Queen and King. Suar, also known as rain tree or monkey pod, is a durable tropical hardwood with a grain that differs from piece to piece. Read more in What is suar wood?

Bed frame styles: platform, storage, floating and four-poster

Platform beds. A platform frame holds the mattress directly, with no divan needed. It's the simplest look and the biggest part of our range.

Storage beds. Storage built into the frame, handy in smaller HDB bedrooms.

Pull-out beds. A second bed slides out underneath for guests or siblings.

Floating beds. A recessed base makes the bed seem to hover above the floor.

Four-poster beds. With a tall post at each corner, a four-poster bed makes a statement and looks best in a roomier master bedroom.

Rattan headboards. Several designs pair teak with a rattan headboard for a lighter, more relaxed feel.

Made to your size: custom bed frames from our own factory

Our furniture is made by our own craftsmen in Indonesia, so any custom size is possible. For an existing bed frame, we can also change its drawer configuration or colour finish. The extra cost depends on the additional materials and how complex the piece is, and made-to-order pieces typically take 60 to 90 days, or 60 to 120 days depending on the time of year.

Finishes come in five colour shades: 5N, 0N (Lite), 2N, 3N and 4N. 5N is the lightest tone and 4N is almost black.

What bed frame sizes fit Singapore mattresses?

Wihardja's bed frames come in four Singapore sizes: Single for a 91 × 190 cm mattress, Super Single for 107 × 190 cm, Queen for 152 × 190 cm and King for 183 × 190 cm. The frame itself is a little bigger than the mattress, and its outside size varies by design, so check each product's dimensions against your room before you order.

Will a Japanese or UK-size bed frame fit my Singapore mattress?

Not always. Singapore mattresses are typically 190 cm long, while Japanese sizes run to about 195 cm and UK sizes to about 200 cm, so the length and sometimes the width won't match. Wihardja's frames are listed for 190 cm mattresses. If your mattress is a different size, send us its measurements and ask about a custom-size frame.

What type of wood is best for a bed frame?

A solid hardwood is the safer choice, because a bed frame takes weight every night and the joints need to stay tight. Teak is popular in Singapore for its density and natural oils. Engineered boards such as MDF and particleboard cost less, but they can swell when they absorb moisture. Almost all of Wihardja's bed frames are solid teak, and we also have a suar wood design.

Is teak a good wood for Singapore's humid weather?

Yes. Teak has a naturally high oil content, which helps it resist moisture, rot and insects, so it copes well with humidity. Like all timber, it takes in and releases moisture as the weather changes, so small surface cracks may appear over time. These don't affect the strength or construction of the frame.

Is teak furniture termite-proof, and how do I care for a teak bed frame?

No wood is completely termite-proof, but teak's natural oils make it highly resistant to insects and rot. Teak needs little upkeep. If you want to keep its colour, Wihardja's wood care guide suggests applying teak oil about once every three months, and our own teak oil is available at the showroom.

A bunk bed suits two children sharing a room, while a loft bed frees up the floor underneath for a desk or storage, so the practical choice depends on who sleeps there and how high your ceiling is.
